Vanessa Rayner is the pedagogical consultant for elementary mathematics for the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board, where she collaborates with elementary math teachers to develop effective teaching practices and foundational understandings essential to building and extending math concepts and skills across the elementary curriculum. Putting this understanding into practice supports the teaching of difficult concepts and skills and makes learning accessible to students who struggle in mathematics. With over ten years of experience as a pedagogical consultant and preservice teacher educator, her practice is deeply tied to Vanessa’s studies which focused on developing preservice teachers’ knowledge for teaching elementary mathematics and their role as reflective practitioners. Her role involves providing QEP-related information concerning teaching and evaluation, expertise related to the research on teaching elementary mathematics, professional development, instructional coaching and co-teaching. Vanessa is a strong advocate for building student’s proficiency in mathematics by developing conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, strategic competence, adaptive reasoning, and a productive disposition.
